BLACK GIRLS ROCK!

BLACK GIRLS ROCK! has been dedicated to the healthy development of young women and girls. BLACK GIRLS ROCK! seeks to build the self-esteem and self-worth of young women of color by changing their outlook on life, broadening their horizons, and helping them to empower themselves. For the past four years, they have enjoyed the opportunity to enrich the lives of girls aged 12 to 17 years old through mentorship, arts education, cultural exploration and public service. In honor of the BLACK GIRLS ROCK movement I recongized 3 young african-american women helping young girls become confident and intelligent young women.

Name: Shavonte'
Age: 23
Education: Bachelor's in Education
                    Currently a grad student
Occupation: Elementary school teacher
She rocks because: Shavonte' decided at a young age she would become a school teacher. Growing up she rather stay in the house and play school with her dolls then be outside jumping rope. After going through high school she seen how the girls coming after her were not respecting themselves as they should. It was then she decided to help the youth in her community. Once in college, she bcame to busy to work with the youth as she would have liked but she knew she would have to find someway to be invovled. Once in her senior year she began working with a mentoring program for a local middle school. Now, she is working with younger kids but she knows learning about having confidence in oneself starts at a young age.

Name: Robyn
Age:24
Education: Bachelor's in Sports Medicine
Occuption: Administration Assistant
                    Assistant Athletic Trainer
She rocks because: Robyn has found a way to combine her love for sports and helping the youth in her community. After taking a job as an athletic trainer in at the high school in her community, she partnered up a high school friend to began an after-school program. The program was opened for all youth but they saw a strong need for young girls in the local high school. The program is designed to help young girls learn to become productive women in society. Even though it is her dream to work as an athletic training for an NFL, she wants to be able to open up multiple program centers in other less privilaged cities.

Name: Unica
Age: 23
Education: Bachelor's in Education
Occuption: Middle school teacher
She rocks because: Unica majored in Journalism as a freshmen in college but after writing a story on the younger generation of girls who were lacking self-respect and respectable role models. She knew helping young girls was truely where her heart was. She fell so in love with kids she switched her major to education. Unica interned with elementary school but soon realized she rather work with older kids.  After graduating, she moved back to her hometown and became extremely close with her 14-year old who is a cheerleader at their local high school.  Unica began taking her niece to practices and competitions and was soon approached about being a mentor for one of the girls on the team. She was honored to be asked to be a "big sister" for the teenager. Soon the other cheerleaders wanted a "big sister" so Unica recruited some of her friends she felt would also set good examples for the girls.

In our society it is extremely hard to have positive african-american women who are willing to give their time and energy to look after our youth. Shavonte', Robyn and Unica having giving up much more to commit themseleves to the betterment of the younger generation. It is not a task a lot of us would take on because we are too consumed with ourselves.  These ladies show us BLACK GIRLS ROCK!

fallTRENDS: Shoes

“I don’t know who invented high heels, but all women owe him a lot!”
- Marilyn Monroe

There are three things I can not get enough of 1) shoes 2) more shoes 3) even more shoes. If I could birth a pair I probably would. My obsession with them is that serious. I love all shoes from flats to heels, they all are special in their own way. My number one rule when it comes to shoe...If you are going to wear heels, WEAR THEM, meaning go as high as you can go. Me, personally, I am a 5inch and higher kinda girl. Anything under 5inches has no purpose in my world. NO OFFENSE. Something about high(er) heels changes the whole attitude. You can be sexy, classy, sassy and overall DDG (drop dead gorgeous) with the right pair of heels. Oh this doesn't mean neglect the outfit, its a team they both work together. Honestly, what is one without the other? No rush I'll wait.....yea didn't think so. With Fall quickly approaching us the footwork must be RIGHT! I will give a little Fall preview of some shoes in my opinion are must-haves or at least I would love to have in my closet. And price shouldn't even be an issue of course famous desinger brands will be expensive but there are always shoes designed similar at a lower cost.

When I sit in the house if I am not doing homework (ain't nothing like a smart chick) I am listening to MUSIC. I couldn't stress enough the love I have for MUSIC. I deal with a lot of situations in my life through MUSIC. Some I probably shouldn't because I will be in my bag of feelings (emotions). With that being said I am a LOVE SONG/SLOW JAM fanatic. Something about that MUSIC does something for me. I love to listen to vocals. And on that note I will tell you who my favorite underrated singer is...JOELLE JAMES! I use to call her my favorite unsigned singer but she was recently signed to Chris Brown's label (yes that is her on "Leave the Club" from CB's latest mixtape). When I heard I was so excited like I know her....Side Note, I would love for her to be my "best friend forever" anyone know her tell her I am probably her biggest fan. I am glad she is finally getting some credit she deserves. Y'all homegirl can blow. Her voice is strong and she carries a note with the best of them. I am patiently waiting for her album to drop I will be at the closet Target picking it up. I would never lead my peeps wrong with MUSIC, trust me on this, she is a STAR! Follow her on Twitter @joellejames

fashionSALUTE: Rachel Roy

I have decided every week I will post a fashionSALUTE. This is a post dedicated to those in fashion I feel have made a difference and have fabulous collections. I am team RACHEL ROY as of lately. Its crazy to me I am so in love with fashion but I don't have a favorite designer. I am a fan of all designers in different ways. But Ms. Roy has stolen my heart. She worked her way from the bottom to the top. And in my opinion she still doesn't get the credit she deserves. A lot of people are like huh? Rachel Ray you mean the chef....ummm....NO! I mean the fashion designer ROY. She started her career with the famous urban line Rocawear (Jay-z and Dame Dash) as an intern. In 2005 she launched her own self titled line. What I love about her collection? It is ready to wear yet unique enough to turn heads. Her collections are not limited she doesn't just design clothes but shoes, bags and jewelry. Rachel by Rachel Roy is what I want to find in my closet every morning when I wake up. Along with designing her fierce collections she is also a philanthropist. I love to see individuals in high places giving back and helping those in need. .....Side Note: "Dear Santa, the Huddson wedge bootie with the leopard pony that covers the entire bootie (5inch heel and 1inch platform) will be a wonderful present under my tree this year. THANKS in advance." Ok I get side tracked easily but this week my fashionSALUTE is presented to the talented and GORGEOUS Rachel Roy.

Santa look!!!

Love Affair: Fashion &Music [[EXPOSED]]

Hey ya'll, I've decided to start a blog, a fishbowl size portion will be about fashion with a shot glass size about music and a slice of lime size portion will be about my life as I know it...it won't be targeted to all audiences just those who enjoy having a love affair with fashion and music as I do. (and yes I did refer to the sections with an alcohol comparison). This blog will be most of my thoughts on a daily basis. Honestly I shouldn't say daily because I don't know if I will blog everyday but I will try. Then again, some days I might blog more than once. WARNING: My thoughts are random!! So bare with me this might take some getting use to but I am super excited to have a place to talk about fashion, music and my life.
